As one of 4 daughters of "Sonny" in the book, I was emotionally vested in learning the stories of my Dad's and his sisters childhood -- stories I had not been told as my Dad was a stoic and quiet. I only learned of the Basye childrens hardships in snipets contributed by my Mother and later by Aunt Betty and Aunt Mildred late in my Dad's life. This adds so much to my understanding of what made him the humble and hardworking success of a man he became. Thank you Aunt Bettie for your memories and for writing them down. I hope others enjoy learning of this very tumultuous and romantic era as much as I did. Hope you follow up with more memoirs of your life. Mary

Bettie, You are an amazing author! Your book, "The Girl Downriver" has moved and inspired me. I was particularly touched by your transformation from a young girl into a woman who broke the cycle of "male dominance." of that time. Your Army Nurse Journal of World War Two gave me insight to an historical event that is not taught in school. I have many questions and wonderings--but on top of the list is: Do you ever wonder what happen to William (Bill) White? ...any regrets?

I had the honor of working with Bettie at Aldersly as a nursing student at Dominican University of California. We spent several days together, where I gathered information to write a biography about her for my nursing class. She was such a sweet and caring individual.
